Wahiba & Salalah - Between beaches and dune sands
Wahiba
Your journey continues to Wahiba sands, with its golden sand dunes. This vast northwestern region of Oman is also referred to as The Sharqiya Sands or Ramlat al-Wahiba by locals, and covers 4,800 square miles of mostly uninhabited desert space. The area is famed for its stunning golden dunes – just as spectacular as the Sahara’s, albeit on a smaller scale.
One of the main attractions here is the presence of the centuries-old Bedu people, who specialized in raising camels for organized races across the region (held annually from October to April.) The less conservative Bedouin lifestyle here also allows women to have a more active role in society, and they are instantly recognizable with their brightly-colored costumes, detailed masks and flowing robes.
Salalah
Salalah is known for its unique Khareef (monsoon) festival, in which the whole city turns green and attracts visitors from all around the world. Nevertheless, there is more to this mind-blowing gem in terms of natural beauty and architectural wonder. Here are the best things to do, and the most splendid places to visit in Salalah. The city is the birthplace of the current Omani leader, Sultan Qaboos, and is located in the Dhofar Governorate in southern Oman. It is the second largest city in Oman, but the biggest in Dhofar, and the biggest sea port in the Arab Peninsula. From the north, the city is surrounded by a mountain range that turns green with spectacular waterfalls during the Khareef season. From the south, it has a long beautiful coast that is embellished with white sands.
